The subject line may sound borderline provocative, but there is actually a good chance that your income puts you in at least the richest 10%, if not the richest 1%, in the world.
Hard to believe? 🤯
Why don't you estimate where you would place yourself? And then use our new “How rich am I?” calculator to see just how right you were.
The “How rich am I” calculator
The calculator shows you what percentage of the world's population has a higher and what percentage has a lower income than you. Cost of living differences between countries are automatically taken into account.
🇺🇸/🇩🇪 So far, our calculator is only available in German. If you don't read German, we recommend that you check out the English-language calculator of our partner organization Giving What We Can instead (on which ours is based).
What conclusions you draw from the result is a very personal question. We ourselves, in any case, see it as a reason to be grateful. Even though our lives are certainly not free of challenges, we are doing extremely well compared to most people in the world.
And... we wouldn't be Effektiv Spenden if we didn't also take it as an occasion to think about donating a little more generously. To help those who have not been so lucky and are not among the richest 10%, but the poorest 10% in the world.
Imagine giving a percentage of your income 🫴
What if you donated 1%, 2%, 5% or even more of your income?
If you have an average German income and donate 5% of it, you still belong to the richest 5% of the world's population.
And you could use these 5% every year to:
From our point of view, this is an offer that is hard to turn down: A small sacrifice for us, a huge benefit for others. And the feeling that we are doing the right thing.
Our before-mentioned partner Giving What You Can shows where you might end up if you take the results and their implications very seriously. Over the past few years, they helped build a community of over 9,000 people from more than 100 countries who have made a public commitment to donate at least 10% of their income to effective charities.
Among them is bestselling author Rutger Bregman (“Humankind”, “Utopia for Realists”). In a new video, he explains how he came to take the 🔸10% Pledge and how he believes it enriches his life.
English with German subtitles
If you're interested but not ready to make the serious commitment of the 🔸10% Pledge, the 🔹Trial Pledge may be for you. It allows you to decide what percentage of your income you want to give and for how long.
Whether you were surprised by the results of the calculator or already fully aware of the huge global inequality: You probably know people who would be quite astonished. And who might even be open to getting more involved as a result.
Just how interested and amazed people sometimes react to this topic is shown very well in this video by Giving What We Can, in which they let passers-by in London fill in the calculator.
👉 We therefore invite you to send the link to our “How rich am I?” calculator (or to the English version of Giving What We Can) to a few friends, family members or colleagues who might be interested.
Best wishes from Berlin,
Your team from Effektiv Spenden
PS: As of late, there is finally a French-speaking effective giving organization: Mieux Donner. The two founders, Romain Barbe and Jennifer Stretton, are based in France, but also advise donors in Romandy. Please share their offer with people who might be interested. 🇫🇷
